A larger than life copper sculpture of CJ Dennis stands outside the Biles Art Gallery as a memorial to the memory of the renowned poet and balladeer, whose boyhood home was Laura. The bust of CJ Dennis is located in Hughes Street at the Civic Centre. In 1915 CJ Dennis published The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke which is probably the highest selling collection of poetry in the nation's history.
The sculpture celebrates the life of poet CJ Dennis, creator of the Sentimental Bloke. Father, James Dennis, was licensee of the Beetaloo Reservoir Hotel from 1892 to 1909. A similar sculpture resides at the Auburn Hotel.
